The National Autonomous University of Mexico is the largest university in Latin America, with the Engineering School alone having 11 K students.  UNAM is currently building their campus in SL for Engineering School Distance Education Programs and also connecting with companies in the Real World to help take engineering design and training to the next level.

A couple projects UNAM has been working on:

A few dozen developers from UNAM's computer engineering department got together to create a model of a landscape and city that can be used to examine how water is used by humans, how it is dispersed and how it can be recovered. Variables within the model can be adjusted, such as weather, to view its impact on hydraulics.  This content will be used for education as well as training.  UNAM is working with The National Association of Water and Sanitation Utilities of Mexico to provide them with simulation training program of cities, to explore city infrastructure to help teach employees about water purification, treatment, distribution, how to handle leaks, how to address metal containments.

Another training project they are working on that has real world implications involves energy.  UNAM has built a Second Life model of an oil rig used for walking tours and demonstrations and because of the leeway in Second Life building tools the rig allows trainees to visualize its internal components as well.  A second project they looking into in the field of energy education are plans to explore information exchange between between a Second Life power plant model and a real world construct for certain functions, which can allow the Second Life model to act as a visualization of and interface of the real world plant.
