Google O3D API Open Source 3D Application in the Browser

In November of 2008 Google announced the end of Google Lively, their virtual world platform.  There has been much speculation since then, of Google working on another platform to re-enter the Virtual World space.

Google Release O3D - Open Source web API for creating interactive 3D applications in the browser.  This API is shared at the early stage as part of a conversation with the broader developer community about establishing an open web standard for 3D graphics.

There is another effort called CD3L - sponsored by The Khronos group in collaboration with Mozilla, that looks very similar.  This could mean more frustration and fragmentation for web developers as they may have to navigate different specifications for different implementations and prolong the process of making an open web standard for 3D graphics.

3D Web APIs are still in their early days. Having multiple APIs in play, will allow the marketplace decide which API is best.
