OpenSim open source virtual world platform has seen a dramatic increase over the last few weeks due to the efforts of a growing number of opensim vendors. This number does not include organizations who directly download the OpenSim software and quietly run it behind their firewall.
The new software comes with a default configuration, which previously required an intense technical background to set up. There is a Metaverse Ink search engine that allows a registration and connection to more than 200 small standalone grids.
The OpenSim grid has no age restrictions and has easy to learn tools to set safe environment for kids under 13. Access to Noob orientation and inventory items are limited. The community is much smaller that Second Life and running the environment requires a fair bit of technical support.
Is there anyone in the Helix Virtual Worlds group who has experiences to share with using OpenSim? Please share your stories.
