What is the Report about?
Helix’s two-year global research project on Virtual Worlds and metaverse experiences addresses several key questions, including:
- What are the major market dynamics supporting the development of Virtual World economies?
- What are the online consumer and business-to-business experiences that are being created in Second Life?
- What are the best practices in Second Life? What new forms of communication and patterns of customer interaction are being used?
- What do organizations need to do to be successful in using Virtual Worlds to create and launch these VW experiences?
In preparation for Helix’s two year research project, Helix created the proprietary Virtual World Value Index (VWVI) methodology to evaluate each VW presence using a standard set of Virtual World business practices. The VWVI tests event density, media experience richness, products and services reach, and community experience. This index is used to provide organizations interested in deploying Virtual Worlds (VWs) with a set of success indicators to evaluate their VW implementations. This comprehensive research report reviews 27 Virtual World case study experiences in Second Life, provides an orientation into Virtual Worlds and identifies best practices. Diverse market sectors covered in this research report include: automotive, consumer packaged goods, financial services, government services, high tech, media & publishing, telecom and education.
Note: Helix researched the majority of Sims in Second Life over a two year period from the spring of 2006 to the report’s official launch in February 2009. This report uses a case study research methodology leveraging both qualitative and quantitative techniques against a Helix proprietary Virtual World Value Index (VWVI) methodology to evaluate SL Sims. The SL research cases are designed to demonstrate key learnings (such as trends, best practices and opportunities) for Virtual Worlds. This report is not designed to act as a ‘guided tour’ of SL. Due to the ongoing changes inherent to VWs, the SL Sims mentioned in this report may have altered since Helix (HCI) has last visited them.
